DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship in 2018

AICGS is now accepting applications for the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship in 2018.

Application deadline: 15 April 2018.
The DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program, funded by a generous grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), is designed to bring both senior and junior scholars and specialists working on key issues of central importance to the German-American relationship to AICGS for research stays of two to three consecutive months each. Fellowships include a monthly stipend of up to $3,820 (depending on the seniority of the applicant); transportation to and from Washington; financial support for research-related travel within the United States and Canada, in particular to the seven DAAD Centers for German and European Studies, for up to a week; and office space at the Institute.

Please note that the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship supports fellows conducting research at AICGS in Washington, DC. We are unable to support research in Germany/Europe.

During their tenure, DAAD/AICGS Research Fellows will be expected to present their research results at a workshop to the broader Washington, DC, policy community and produce a short analytical essay that will be published on the AICGS website and distributed via the Institute’s targeted analysis newsletter, The AICGS Advisor. AICGS welcomes applications from individuals at academic institutions, think tanks, and public policy and research organizations.

The fellowship is open to:
  • German scholars working in the United States, Germany, and elsewhere; as well as to
  • Non-German applicants who are either permanently based in Germany or are currently at one of the DAAD Centers for German and European Studies across the globe.

Project proposals should address a topic closely related to one or more of the Institute’s three research and program areas:

  • Foreign and Domestic Policy
  • Society, Culture & Politics
  • Geoeconomics
Special consideration will be given to research projects addressing the Institute’s current focus areas, including international trade, workforce training, immigration and integration issues, international reconciliation, and foreign policy strategies and security policies. Projects should also be compatible with and supportive of the AICGS mission, which is to promote better understanding of the challenges and choices facing Germany and the United States in a broader global arena. The Institute produces objective and original analysis of developments and trends in Germany, Europe, and the United States; creates new transatlantic networks; and facilitates dialogue among the business, political, and academic communities to manage differences and define and promote common interests.

Accepted fellows will be able to expand and strengthen their networks and contacts to scholars, policy experts, practitioners, and officials, not only in Washington, DC, but also beyond the DC metropolitan area. Fellows will be able to travel to other locations to meet with experts and/or attend events and conferences relevant to their projects. Mentoring during the fellowship will be provided by AICGS senior staff and in-residence fellows—as appropriate, depending on the seniority of the fellows—to maximize individual fellow’s tenure at AICGS. Collaboration and exchange with AICGS experts and fellows will be encouraged.

Qualifications
  1. Applicants must be either German; or non-German and working permanently in Germany or currently at one of the DAAD Centers for German and European Studies across the globe.
  2. Applicants should be of junior or senior status. Junior applicants must have completed or currently be working on a PhD. Only in exceptional cases will fellowships be awarded to applicants with an MA, who are not PhD students.
  3. All application materials MUST be submitted in English and received by AICGS by the deadline in order to be considered for fellowships in the specified period.
  4. Individuals who have received a grant or other support from the DAAD within three years of the starting date of the fellowship are not eligible to apply. This does not apply for applicants affiliated with DAAD Centers for German and European Studies.
Application Procedure
There is no formal application form. To apply for the DAAD/AICGS fellowship program, please submit the following materials electronically, combined in one PDF file:

  •  A brief cover letter; please indicate your citizenship/eligibility in the cover letter and how you have heard about the fellowship
  • A curriculum vitae, with a list of publications (if relevant)
  • A project proposal (5-7 pages, double-spaced) outlining in clear, concise terms the substantive thrust of the research and its relevance to the AICGS mission, the reasons for carrying it out at AICGS and in Washington, DC, the timeframe of the fellowship at AICGS, including dates and length (two or three months). Since the fellowship provides funds to travel to other regions in the U.S., an outline about how the travel funds will be used should be included as well.
  • Two recent letters of reference (only for PhD students and recent PhDs (received in the last five years).
  • Successful applicants must be proficient in the English language. We recommend that non- U.S. applicants submit the results of a recognized English language proficiency test (TOEFL or IELTS) with their application if the test was taken within the last 12 months.
  • Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee and AICGS will conduct interviews (in person or via video-conference) with select applicants.
Application Deadlines
For calendar year 2018 (June – December): 15 April 2018
For calendar year 2019 (January-December): 1 December 2018

Visa Requirements
If selected as DAAD/AICGS fellows, applicants must be eligible for and obtain a J-1 visa from a U.S. consulate or embassy (unless they have work authorization for the U.S.). Applicants should be aware that, due to U.S. immigration regulations, J-1 visas may be subject to the two-year rule, which prohibits individuals from returning to the United States on certain types of visa for a period of two years upon completion of their fellowship at AICGS. AICGS will provide detailed information about the visa process once a fellow has been selected.

DAAD Graduate Workshop for Young Researchers in German and European Studies
6 December 2018, Berlin

On the occasion of the conference of DAAD-funded Centres for German and European Studies 2018, we invite advanced Master and PhD students affiliated with the centres, and working on projects in the fields of contemporary German and European studies to participate in our graduate workshop for young researchers. The first graduate workshop on December 6, 2018 will provide a forum for presenting ongoing research on present and future challenges for Germany and other European societies. The financial crisis in 2007/2008 the so-called refugee crisis in 2015, the Brexit votes as well as the rise of right-wing and populist parties in many countries and their success in recent elections; these and other political, economic and social challenges urge us to review the continent’s past and present and think about future strategies and visions.
